INVESTING IN THE
NEXT GENERATION OF COMMUNICATION LEADERS: SUMMER 2026 INTERNSHIP RECAP

Summer 2026
Internship Recap

In 2026, BCOMM welcomed our first intern, creating a new opportunity to provide hands-on professional experience and an inside look at the strategy, creativity, and collaboration that go into supporting our clients.

Mia, a San Francisco native and Communications major at the University of San Francisco, joined the BCOMM team for a six-week internship to gain practical experience supporting client communications, content development, and strategic marketing initiatives while learning more about the public relations and communications industry.

Hear directly from Mia as she reflects on her time at BCOMM, the work she contributed to, and what she learned along the way.

This summer, I had the opportunity to intern at BCOMM, a boutique, Black woman-owned communications firm that works closely with local businesses, nonprofits, and city agencies. Going into this internship, I was excited to gain real-world experience, but I did not expect it to change the way I thought about my future career. One of the most valuable parts of the experience was seeing how communications can directly support organizations and the communities they serve.

One project that particularly stood out to me was my work with 3rd Street Youth Center & Clinic. I had the opportunity to create social media and communications content for an organization that provides important resources to young people and families in San Francisco. It was exciting to see my ideas go from the initial drafting stage through graphic design and, eventually, to being published. It made me realize how much the skills I have learned in my public relations courses could be applied in a professional setting. Instead of only learning about campaigns, messaging, and audience engagement in class, I was able to contribute to work that had a real purpose and impact. This experience also showed me how much thought goes into making sure an organization’s message is clear, effective, and reaches the people who need it most.

Throughout my time at BCOMM, I learned the importance of being clear, concise, and intentional with communication. Sitting in meetings, setting weekly agendas, and working on a variety of projects showed me how important effective communication is, especially when a project goes through multiple people before it is ready to be published. I also gained a better understanding of how a company’s values influence the work it takes on. Working with nonprofits and city agencies sparked my interest in the relationship between communications and government and even inspired me to add a secondary minor in politics.

Overall, this experience broadened my perspective on what I can do with my degree in Communication Studies. It gave me the opportunity to apply what I have learned in the classroom while also contributing to work that was bigger than just a completed assignment. In many ways, this internship reflected USF’s mission of cura personalis, or care for the whole person, by giving me the opportunity to support organizations that are making a difference in their communities. I am incredibly grateful for this experience and look forward to carrying what I learned this summer into my final year at USF and, eventually, into my future career.
